From the streets and bazaars of Tehran to the moonlit Turkish mountains, Under a Starless Sky is a beautiful memoir about one family's extraordinary journey.

It took two revolutions to bring Banafsheh and her husband Mark together. Mark’s grandparents fled from the Bolsheviks in the 1920s; half a century later, Banafsheh and her family fled their home in Tehran in the midst of Iran/Iraq’s war. They met in Sydney where they both completed their Bachelor of Information Science in the quiet leafy suburbs of North Shore. At the completion of her degree (and after many months of soul searching with a backpack through foreign countries) Banafsheh joined the family business, working part time in their two Angus & Robertson Franchise bookstores in Sydney’s western suburbs. She currently lives in Sydney with her husband and their two sons.

Banafsheh is passionate about reading, collecting and sharing her books. In 2003 she set a goal to write a memoir for her children to read when they were older. She felt a need to give a voice to thousands of refugees who, at great risk to their lives, have fled oppressive regimes or war-torn countries, and are wrongly imprisoned in detention centres. She wanted her own children, who may otherwise dismiss the plight of these people, to identify with them through her experiences and not just turn a blind eye.

Under a Starless Sky is the result of that goal.
